PROJECT R20: Uplift a Nation with the Nation

DOJ have embarked on a fund raising drive to recruit 100 000 monthly donors for a minimum donation of R20 per month in order to setup a bursary fund for deserving individuals.

When you educate a child you educate a community. We believe educated individuals from less fortunate communities can also have a positive impact on the entire country by being role models and paying it forward to others in similar situations.

We undertake to convert your minimum R20 a month donation into opportunities that can multiply ten fold in the years to come.

What is the main objective of this project?

Initially, we are looking to raise R2 million by asking 100’000 people to donate R20 and commit to doing so each month in order to expand the reach of the bursary fund. The reason we are keeping the minimum amount at R20 is that we want to make this project accessible to every single individual young and old to contribute to the upliftment of his/her community. ALLAH rewards are based on sincerity and thus every donation big or small will contribute equally to the success of this project.

What do we want to do with the money raised?

To create a permanent impact in the communities we support we are expanding our projects into the Education Funding arena. As the first word revealed by ALLAH in the QURAN states… “Read…..” – revealed by ALLAH using the command tense indicating the importance of education we aim to provide Financial Assistance to as many deserving students as our finances, through your generous donations will allow.

How does the slogan “UPLIFT the NATION with the NATION” fit in with our objective?

There are so many talented kids who have the potential to extricate themselves from the cycle of poverty they are born into but lack the resources to achieve this. Government can only do so much! DOJ wants to step into the vacuum and provide the platform for as many individuals as possible to achieve their dreams. The difference with this project is that we are literally asking every community member to be part of this revolution and journey of each student without being a burden to anyone. The student in turn will have to commit to working to improve the conditions that exist within his/her own community on completion of his/her studies. A small contribution of R20 by all individuals of every community could go a long way to start permanently changing the lives of many.

How do we envisage getting our message out to everyone?

Many avenues will be utilised to spread the message. Radio, Social Media channels, Web site, You Tube, Influencers, Word of mouth, TV etc etc. The public will regularly be informed of numbers of people committed, quantity of money raised and how it has been allocated.

How will money be allocated?

We have a very exciting process planned for how monies will be allocated. Our aim is to have 1 student in every suburb (? x suburbs x avg 50k pa) of Cape Town as a beneficiary of this programme. Every member of every suburb would in one way or the other have played a role in the success of the student.
Further information will be posted on our website and social media platforms. Once the project is up and running regular appearances on the radio will inform the broader public of all the details relating to the distribution of the funds.

What is Project R20?

Project R20 is a project which aims to raise R2m per month through having 100’000 people signing a debit order of at least R20 per month.

What is the Objective of Project R20?

The objective is to provide financial support to individuals wanting to educate themselves to be able to access the job market and provide for their families. We have identified education as a key driver in taking people out the revolving cycle of poverty.

Who can access this project?

The scope of this project and keeping the (minimum) Debit Order as small as possible allows access to every single individual young and old to participate and share the barakah In Sha ALLAH. As we are targeting the masses we are hoping that people in every area will feel proud that they have contributed to the success of 1 or more individual from their own area. That person in turn will then contribute towards the well being of the community they reside in.

How do we aim to sign 100’000 Debit Orders?

We will rely on our members and the community at large to play an absolutely critical role in the success of this project. If each person buying into this project is able to access their families, friends and social media network we will already have an excellent start to this project. From there we will be accessing the Radio, Social Media Influencers, Sheiks, Masjid Committees, Advertisements, Flyers and any other medium that is willing to help. Importantly, the scope of this project allows for Muslims and Non Muslims to contribute. Manner of presentation of this project to recipients is very important.

As education is very expensive how do envisage distributing funds during the growth stage?

Initially and probably for the rest of the 2022 will be used to market the project and sign as many Debit Orders as possible. This will allow us to accumulate as much funds as possible. In 3 to 6 months, if we have accumulated sufficient finance we aim to advertise that our first awards will be for the 2023 year of study. We will provide an update on Radio and other channels monthly of how many Debit Orders we have signed and how much we still require.

How will we choose recipients?

The idea is that we will look to help students in different communities eg Salt River, Langa, Du Noon, Mitchells Plain, Woodstock, etc. To drum up interest and to make it exciting we will do it in conjunction with the radio, drop all the areas into a bag and draw the areas where the students will be chosen from live. We would probably do the same when drawing the student from the area that has been chosen. Once an area has been drawn once we will try to avoid drawing that area again. A requirement for our bursaries will be students who are prepared to do community work in the area of their residence on completion of their studies.

Will we cover tuition only?

That is the plan at this stage. We want the student and his/her family to also contribute to the success of the student. This may be adjusted later and will be considered case by case.

Will money be paid to the individual?

No, monies will be disbursed to the institution only

Will bursaries be paid back on completion of studies?

No, it will not be a requirement. But it is at this point where we believe we will be different from any other organisation out their In Sha ALLAH. What we want is that every student who receives a bursary from us be involved in social upliftment work – successful bursars will therefore not just be those that got the best marks. What we want is that each Bursar signs a contract committing to establish a similar organisation like DOJ in their area. He/She must then identify the needs of his/her community and how he/she plans to help. We as DOJ will always be around to assist him/her whilst setting up and implementing his/her plans. What we are ultimately hoping for is that each area or community will have a group that looks after their area and in that way become much more effective at alleviating the problems within their communities In Sha ALLAH. With this in mind we are hoping that the Bursary fund grows way beyond our expectations so that the impact of our work can be spread at a much faster rate In Sha ALLAH.
